The trim kit is to be used when deck thickness exceeds the height of the flange of the deck hatch. The result is average because the trim kit is not rigid, in order to fit in the rounded corners, which results in the sides not being very straight. The trim kit must be cut to accommodate the thickness of the deck. One must be careful not to cut it too low, of course, but too high is not good either because if it touches the hatch panel, the result will not look good. The margin is the height of the flange. The trim kit must be inserted behind (exterior) of the flange. The trim kit replaces the seal that comes with the Roller shade. In order to insert the trim kit, the opening in the deck must be larger than the flange, at least twice the thickness of the trim kit. (If the flange touches the cut of the deck, there is no way one can insert the trim kit between the deck opening and the flange. I had to enlarge the opening in the deck to accommodate this.)

If the roller shade is mounted on a removable piece of plywood (covered with headlining) it's more complex since such panels are flexible and fit the curvature of the deck, so the distance between the roller shade and the deck hatch flange will vary, making it difficult to adjust the trim kit.

Beware that the roller shad must be mounted on a flat surface, so it won't fit under a curved deck without some sort of supporting plate to deal with the curvature. With a removable piece of plywood supporting the headlining, it is possible to modify the curvature of the plywood in order to make the part supporting the roller shade flat (which in turn modifies the height of the trim kit.)

As one can see, this has to be planed with caution not to cut the trim kit to low. It is regrettable that the documentation provided doesn't deal in detail with these problems, and Lewmar's technical support is absolutely awful, so one might not count on them to help.
