Regulations dictate that distress flares must be carried by commercial vessels and it is highly advisable to carry flares on leisure craft. They could save your vessel or even your life. You will need a variety of flares for different situations.
Red flares at night or in poor visibility and orange flares by day are used to signal your distress and to help pinpoint your precise location in the final mile of a search. These can be hand held or rocket flares. Rocket flares can be seen at a greater distance. White hand held flares are used as collision warnings and to provide illumination. Floating orange flares can be deployed to mark your position or to indicate wind direction during a rescue.
The Pirates Cave range features all of the flares that you need and the flares have been chosen from the excellent Pains Wessex collection. You can purchase flares individually to supplement your safety equipment or you can invest in our handy kits. We offer kits for inshore, coastal and offshore cruising. Each kit contains the recommended type and quantity of flares as follows:
Inshore Distress Kit
The Pains Wessex Inshore Distress Kit is for use when you are sailing up to 3 miles from the shore. This kit includes 2 red hand held flares and 2 orange hand held flares.
Coastal Distress Kit
This kit is for use up when you are up to 7 miles from shore and includes 2 red hand held flares, 2 orange hand held flares and 1 rocket flare.
Offshore Distress Kit
If you are venturing further out to sea then you will need the Offshore Distress Kit. This one includes 4 red hand held flares, 2 orange smoke floating flares and 4 red rocket flares.
Pyrotechnic flares could save your life but they are not without their problems. They are potentially dangerous and cannot be carried with you when you fly. They have a limited shelf life and must be disposed of properly. When deployed, they burn for a short time only.
At Pirates Cave we also offer LED flares which are a long lasting, safe alternative to traditional distress signals. LED flares can be kept for years, their replaceable batteries ensure infinite hours of operation and the flares will burn for hours rather than seconds. These robust and compact devices can travel everywhere with you including onto a plane and their longevity makes them a cost effective choice for the long term.
If you are unsure whether to invest in pyrotechnic or LED flares then why not carry both? You will have all bases covered and your LED flares can be carried in case of distress when you are enjoying a number of activities in the great outdoors.
