Despite the proliferation of new technology, sometimes more traditional equipment is the most effective way to remain safe. That is certainly true of fog horns. In times of reduced visibility, visual navigation aids can be obscured or rendered completely invisible. You may not be able to see other craft until it is too late and they may not be able to see you. When the fog descends it is necessary to use your ears as well as your eyes if you wish to avoid a collision. Wherever you intend to sail you should carry a fog horn.
Your boat may be fitted with such signalling equipment but you might still need back up.
In times of reduced visibility you are required to emit an audible warning at least once every two minutes in order to avoid collisions. Vessels over 12 metres in length must adhere to specific signals which you should acquaint yourself with if you sail such a vessel. Please note that restricted visibility refers to severe rain or smoke, not just fog.
At Pirates Cave we have a comprehensive range of fog horns for you to choose from. Vital for adverse weather conditions but also useful for attracting attention, our fog horns have an impressive audible range.
