What are the best boat anodes for saltwater use?

What are the best boat anodes for saltwater use?

By: SamComments: 0

Boat anodes are one of the most important components of your boat maintenance schedule, as they protect essential parts of your vessel from corroding by sacrificing themselves – hence the team sacrificial anodes. Without anodes, your boat will have no protection from galvanic corrosion, which occurs when two dissimilar metals are brought into electrical contact underwater.

Zinc and aluminium anodes are suitable for salt water use, where-as magnesium anodes are not, as the salt content will significantly increase the rate of corrosion. Instead, magnesium anodes are more suitable for freshwater.

Aluminium Boat Anodes For Saltwater

Aluminium anodes are rapidly increasing in popularity as they can be used in salt and brackish water. Furthermore, in comparison with zinc, aluminium anodes have an electrical capacity up to three times higher than that of comparable zinc anodes, enabling you to protect a larger area with fewer anodes – which is especially useful on areas such as the hull or rudder and trim tab!Aluminium boat anodes also corrode at a slower rate, so last longer.

When it comes to cost, the scales tip in aluminium’s favour too. Due to current metal prices, aluminium anodes are often cheaper than their zinc counterparts – and as aluminium anodes are 2.5x lighter, shipping costs tend to be lower, as is the effort required to fit them.

Aluminium anodes do not contain cadmium as it is not required to achieve the correct electrical capacity required from the alloy - unlike zinc, of which cadmium is a key element. Cadmium is a natural element that is harmful to the human and marine population, which is why manufacturers are working around the clock to find other compositions in order to ensure their zinc anodes do not contain the element, which is carcinogenic and poisonous in large quantities.

Zinc Boat Anodes For Saltwater

After reading the above, you may be considering why you’d purchase zinc over aluminium – but don’t turn your back just yet.

Thanks to the density and structural composition of the metal, zinc anodes provide superb impact strength in marine environments, which is why they’re the most commonly used metal for boat anodes, especially around propeller shafts and on hulls. Because they’re more common, zinc anodes are available in a greater range of shapes and size – making them especially useful on narrowboats! Furthermore, zinc anodes will dissolve more evenly in compassion with aluminium anodes.
