Boat wind indicators, also known as wind vanes or wind direction indicators, are instruments used on boats to determine wind direction and sometimes wind speed. They are essential for sailors to optimize their sailing performance by understanding the wind's behaviour relative to their boat.

The primary function of a wind indicator is to show the direction from which the wind is blowing. This is usually indicated by an arrow or vane that points into the wind. The vane rotates freely, aligning itself with the wind direction.

Wind direction indicators come in various types and designs. Simple wind vanes are often mounted on top of the mast or other high points on the boat for better visibility. They can be as basic as a fabric strip or a feather attached to a pivot. More sophisticated versions might use lightweight materials like plastic or carbon fibre and have aerodynamic shapes to minimize drag.

When it comes to installation, installing a wind indicator involves mounting it securely in a location where it can catch the wind without being obstructed by sails, rigging, or other parts of the boat. It should also be easily visible from the helm or wherever the sailor is positioned.

The accuracy of a wind indicator depends on factors such as its design, sensitivity, and placement on the boat. Calibration might be necessary to ensure accurate readings, especially for wind speed measurements.
