Aluminium Hull Anodes

Aluminium Hull Anodes for Effective Corrosion Protection

Aluminium hull anodes help protect a boat’s valuable underwater metalwork from galvanic corrosion. When correctly selected and installed, these sacrificial anodes corrode in place of the hull fittings and equipment connected to them, helping to protect components such as stern gear, shafts, rudders and trim tabs.

Aluminium anodes are a popular choice for boats used in salt water and brackish water. They are lighter than traditional zinc alternatives and remain effective across a wider range of water conditions. This makes them particularly useful for vessels that move between coastal waters, estuaries, rivers and marinas where salinity levels can change.

Choosing the Right Aluminium Hull Anode

Hull anodes are available in different shapes, weights and fitting styles to suit a variety of vessels. The correct option will depend on the boat’s hull material, underwater fittings, operating environment and existing cathodic protection system.

Our range includes aluminium bolt-on hull anodes, which can be secured to suitable studs or fixing points, as well as aluminium weld-on hull anodes for compatible hulls and professional installations.

When replacing an existing anode, check its dimensions, weight, fixing centres and attachment method rather than choosing by appearance alone. Where possible, replace it with an equivalent anode recommended for the vessel or protection system. Are Aluminium Anodes Suitable for Salt Water or Fresh Water?

Aluminium anodes are commonly used in salt water and are also well suited to brackish water, providing a versatile solution for boats that operate in changing conditions. They may be suitable for some freshwater applications, but the correct anode material depends on the boat, its equipment and the water in which it is normally kept.

Magnesium hull anodes are generally preferred for boats kept exclusively in fresh water because magnesium provides a higher driving voltage in low-conductivity conditions. Traditional zinc hull anodes are primarily intended for saltwater use and may become less effective in fresh or brackish water.

Always follow the boat or equipment manufacturer’s guidance when selecting an anode material. Avoid mixing different anode metals within the same connected protection system unless this has been specifically recommended by a qualified marine professional.

Protect Your Boat Below the Waterline

Hull anodes should be inspected regularly and replaced before they have been excessively consumed. An anode that is badly worn, incorrectly fitted or no longer making good electrical contact may not provide adequate protection. If several anodes are installed as part of the same system, they should normally be checked together.
