Winner of the prestigious 2025 Dame Design Award, Garmin OnBoard system is designed to give skippers greater freedom of movement on board while maintaining a high level of safety. Instead of relying on traditional tethered kill cords, the system uses wearable wireless tags that communicate with a compatible Garmin chartplotter. This allows crew members to move naturally around the vessel while still being monitored by the system.
Each tag can be worn comfortably on the wrist or attached to items such as a carabiner or floating key ring, making them easy to carry without getting in the way. Tags can be assigned as either captain or passenger, allowing the system to distinguish between the helm and other crew members. This flexible setup ensures that safety responses are tailored to the role of the person who has gone overboard.
If a tag designated as the captain triggers a man-overboard (MOB) event, the system immediately initiates several safety measures. Power to the engines is automatically cut, an MOB waypoint is created on the connected Garmin chartplotter at the point where the signal was lost, and an audible alarm sounds through the multifunction displays and the system hub. These combined alerts help the remaining crew quickly identify the incident and respond.
Passenger tags also contribute to onboard safety by activating an MOB waypoint and audible alarm if the system detects that a passenger has gone overboard. This ensures the crew is instantly alerted and can navigate directly back to the recorded location.
At the centre of the system is the GOS 10 hub, which manages communication between the tags and onboard electronics. The hub features a powerful external alarm designed to be clearly heard even in noisy marine environments. Tags can also be temporarily disarmed when required, providing convenient control during docking, boarding, or maintenance.
Designed for practical everyday use, the wearable tags offer a battery life that exceeds a full season of typical boating activity, reducing the need for frequent replacements while keeping the safety system ready whenever you are on the water.
