What primer should I use?
Bare wood – Sand smooth with 80-180 and then 280 grade paper before sanding dust by brushing, dusting and wiping. Allow to completely dry before priming with a yacht primer.
Steel – Degrease with a solvent or super cleaner. Clean thoroughly and allow to dry before priming with a yacht primer.
Aluminium – Degrease with a solvent or Yacht Line Super Cleaner. Sand well using 60-120 aluminium grade paper. Clean thoroughly and allow to dry then apply Yacht Primer as soon as possible (within eight hours).
GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) – Degrease with solvent or super cleaner. Sand well using 180-220 grade paper. Clean thoroughly and allow to dry. No primer is required so apply Pre-Kote direct to the surface.
Aged/Weathered Gel Coats – Solvent/moisture entrapment after painting is much higher with Aged/Weathered Gel coats due to their potentially porous nature. Entrapment could lead to blistering of the paint film. To reduce this risk, it’s recommended that you apply three coats of Interprotect to seal the gel coat then overcoat this with Perfection undercoat before applying a top coat.
