Zinc Anodes For Boats

Zinc anodes are sacrificial metal components used to help protect submerged metal parts on boats from galvanic corrosion. When Should Zinc Anodes Be Replaced?

Boat anodes should be inspected regularly as part of routine maintenance, particularly when the vessel is lifted or when relevant equipment is being serviced. Sacrificial anodes are intended to deteriorate, so gradual loss of material is expected.

An anode that has become significantly depleted may no longer provide the intended level of protection and should be replaced in accordance with the vessel or equipment manufacturer's guidance. Avoid relying on a fixed replacement interval unless one is specified for your particular equipment, as anode consumption can vary according to the installation and operating environment.

Zinc, Aluminium or Magnesium Anodes?

Zinc is only one of the materials used for sacrificial anodes. Aluminium anodes and magnesium anodes are also used in marine and boating applications, with suitability depending on factors including water type, vessel construction and equipment requirements.

Rather than choosing an anode material based solely on whether the boat is used in saltwater or freshwater, check the recommendations provided by the boat, engine, saildrive or equipment manufacturer. Changing from one anode material to another without confirming suitability can affect how the corrosion-protection system performs.

Check the Fitting Before You Order

When selecting replacement zinc sacrificial anodes, compare the existing component carefully with the replacement. Check the overall dimensions, hole centres, thread or fixing type, mounting position and intended application where relevant.
