When Are Zinc Hull Anodes Used?

Zinc is traditionally associated with boats kept in saltwater and remains widely used for marine corrosion protection. However, the correct anode material cannot be determined from the hull material alone. Water salinity, the metals being protected, the vessel’s electrical bonding arrangement and the manufacturer’s recommendations can all affect which material is appropriate.

When replacing an existing anode, it is generally sensible to match its material and specification unless a marine engineer or the equipment manufacturer recommends a change. Mixing unsuitable anode materials within the same bonded system may affect how effectively they work, so seek professional guidance if you are uncertain.

Bolt-On or Weld-On Zinc Hull Anodes?

Zinc Bolt On Hull Anodes are designed to attach to existing studs, bolts or mounting points. They are commonly selected when the vessel already has a compatible fixing arrangement, making routine inspection and replacement relatively straightforward. Before ordering, check the anode’s overall dimensions, hole size and distance between fixing-hole centres.

Zinc Weld On Hull Anodes incorporate a steel strap or core that is welded to a suitable steel surface. This fitting style is typically used on steel vessels and other installations designed specifically for welded anodes. Welding should be completed by a suitably competent person, with the installation providing secure metal-to-metal contact and electrical continuity.

Choose the fitting style that matches the boat’s existing installation rather than attempting to adapt an incompatible anode. If the original fixing points, studs or welded straps are damaged, have them assessed before fitting the replacement.

Choosing a Replacement Zinc Hull Anode

A replacement should provide the correct physical fit and electrical connection. Compare the old anode carefully with the listed measurements and consider the following:

  • Dimensions and weight: check the overall length, width, depth and anode mass.
  • Fixing-hole centres: measure from the centre of one fixing hole to the centre of the other.
  • Stud or strap arrangement: confirm the hole diameter, number of mounting points or style and length of the weld-on strap.
  • Electrical contact: mounting faces, studs and straps must make contact with clean, unpainted metal.
  • Existing specification: match the replacement to the original anode wherever possible.
  • Vessel guidance: check the boat builder’s or equipment manufacturer’s specifications if available.

Do not paint the working surface of a sacrificial anode, as this can prevent it from functioning correctly. Inspect hull anodes during lift-out and replace them when they are significantly wasted, loose, cracked, damaged or no longer making reliable electrical contact. Many manufacturers recommend replacement at around 50% wastage, but the applicable vessel or equipment guidance should take priority.

Aluminium and Magnesium Alternatives
