Boat Anodes
Boat Anodes for Reliable Corrosion Protection
Boat anodes play an essential role in protecting underwater metal components from galvanic corrosion. Sometimes referred to as sacrificial anodes, they are designed to corrode in place of more valuable equipment, helping to protect your hull fittings, propeller, propeller shaft, rudder, trim tabs and engine components.
Choosing the correct anode is important because different materials are intended for different types of water. Our range of boat anodes includes aluminium, magnesium and zinc options, alongside application-specific designs for engines, hulls, propellers and other underwater fittings.
Choosing Between Aluminium, Magnesium and Zinc Anodes
The water in which your boat is kept will determine which anode material you require. As a general guide, zinc anodes are traditionally used in salt water, while aluminium anodes are commonly selected for boats operating in salt or brackish water. Magnesium anodes are more active and are normally used in fresh water. Always follow the recommendations of your boat, engine or equipment manufacturer before changing anode material.
Aluminium Anodes
Aluminium anodes are a popular modern choice for boats kept in coastal and brackish environments. Marine-grade aluminium anode alloys should not be confused with ordinary aluminium, as they are specially formulated to provide effective sacrificial protection.
Our selection includes aluminium engine anodes, hanging anodes, hull anodes, propeller anodes, shaft anodes and rudder or trim-tab anodes. This makes it easier to find an aluminium replacement that suits both your vessel and the component that needs protecting.
Magnesium Anodes
Magnesium anodes are designed primarily for boats used in fresh water. Because magnesium is highly active, it can provide the level of protection required in water with lower electrical conductivity. However, it is generally unsuitable for prolonged use in salt water, where it may deteriorate too quickly.
We stock magnesium options for engines, hulls, propellers, propeller shafts, rudders and trim tabs. Magnesium hanging anodes are also available for vessels that need additional temporary protection while moored.
Zinc Anodes
Zinc anodes are the traditional choice for vessels operating in salt water. They remain widely used across recreational, commercial and traditional marine applications, with designs available for many different engines and underwater components.
Explore zinc engine anodes, hanging anodes, hull anodes, propeller anodes, shaft anodes and rudder or trim-tab anodes in a variety of shapes and sizes. When replacing an existing zinc anode, check the dimensions, mounting arrangement and equipment compatibility carefully rather than selecting an option based on appearance alone.
Backing Pads, Fixing Bolts and Anode Installation
An anode can only work properly when it is installed correctly. Our range of backing pads and fixing bolts includes the supporting components needed to create a secure installation and reliable electrical connection.
Anodes should not be painted, coated or installed over a painted mounting surface, as this can prevent the required metal-to-metal contact. They should also be inspected regularly for uneven wear, looseness, damage or excessive depletion. The correct replacement interval will depend on your vessel, its electrical systems, the water conditions and how frequently it is used.
Find the Correct Anodes for Your Boat
Whether you need a replacement engine pencil anode, a hull anode for your next maintenance period or a complete set of propeller and shaft anodes, choosing the right material and fit is essential. Check the existing anode, equipment manufacturer, part number, measurements and water type before ordering. For more information, see our marine anodes explained article on our blog.
